Dedicated to the restoration and preservation of this historic monument located on Meadow Street Next to Salem School in Naugatuck, CT

Dear Comrades,

This magnificent structure, created in 1921 by Evelyn Beatrice Longman and originally funded by the Whittemore family, is in immediate need of repair. Ms Longman has also worked on the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. and various other famous monuments. The flag pole that sits on top of this structure originally reached a majestic one hundred feet into the air. In 1960, it was replaced with a fifty foot pole due to heavy deterioration. The top slab that holds the flag pole has cracked and chipped due to stress and weather over the years. Every Veterans Day, it is the focal point of the ceremonies that we hold on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. The church bells ring, speeches are made, and the monument crumbles before our very eyes.

Naugatuck American Legion Post 17, the Beacon Valley Grange and the Naugatuck Veterans Council have teamed up to get this monument restored and returned to its original beauty. A fund account has been set up with the Naugatuck Valley Savings and Loan and a fund raising committee is being formed to help get this project done.

We are inviting all of the Civic and Veterans groups in the area to participate in this endeavor. Any and all input will be greatly appreciated. Anyone who would like to be included on this committee can call:
